A Review of Veronica (2017)

Based on a true police report in Madrid, the film features a family of three girls and a boy; Veronica, Lucia, Irene and Antonito and their mother. The main character Veronica portrays the struggle of abandonment in her teenage life as she’s left to act as the care taker of her siblings with her mother’s busy schedule.

The setting of the movie is around the solar eclipse where the myths of dark secrets flourish more in their past’s culture. Veronica and her two friends; Rosa and Diana perform a séance to commune with her dead father but it goes haywire with Veronica inviting a spirit into her home. The presence of the blind nun confirms the wrong turn of events and she guides Veronica on how she can perform the cleanse before the spirit takes her life.

The acting by the three kids is superb! The way the kids portray brevity as the film continues depicts a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make them perform to that level. Also the sound effects of the film are good and they foreshadow a lot of the events and in our opinion ruin the scare scenes.

What stands out for this film is that, unlike the normal Ouija board and séance films, this one erodes the use of exorcism and instead the character had to take up personal responsibility for the mistake she made during the séance.

Also, the film shows the struggle of putting up with daily challenges to provide for four mouths alone without the father and how it can have a direct effect on the kids.

The film ends with Veronica dying. This was foreshadowed by her words when the spirit took over her body during the séance and also when her friends refused to help her perform the cleanse. The last scene has a lot of frightening scenes that make the story more interesting.

Veronica’s death is symbolized by the burn on her portrait as she exits the scene on a hospital bed. The tragic events of that night make most of the police officers relocate posts and the family is left to change how they live their lives. The biggest take away from the film is that accountability and healing should be thorough.
